Course descriptions
Creative sustainability

Study in creative sustainability is a 60-credit course taken over 1 year that is divided into diverse workshops (30 credits), theory (10 credits), formative assessment (10 credits), and a final project (10 credits).

The academic year begins in the autumn and finishes in spring.

The studies are the equivalent to the first year university studies where students are required to be 18 years old on commencement and have completed upper secondary-, trade-, or other similar studies. Applications can be made electronically through Hskola‘s website.

Workshops (30 credits)

Workshops are diverse and change from year to year. During the workshops, students gain the opportunity to come into direct contact with raw materials and experience their practical application and properties under the supervision of professionals in the field. Students make their own experimentation through access to the machines and technologies that are required to create from raw materials to finished products.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT (10 credits)

Formative assessments build on a collaboration between students and their professional supervisors, where theory and practical application are intertwined to increase competency and independence to present their own ideas. Emphasis is placed on connecting the study material to current challenges and exercising the ability to make informed, critical decisions about one‘s own work, as well as that of others.

theory (10 credits)

Students engage in the current theories in relevant fields. Guest teachers from various fields present theoretical foundations and knowledge trends, provide professional insights, increase educational diversity and create new connections.

The learning material is presented in a wider context to explore the ideology of sustainability through a historical and theoretical lens.

Final project (10 credits)

The final project is built on independent research and developing an idea under the guidance of a supervisor. Students are expected to develop critical thinking and increase their ability and competency to organise their own work processes and clearly communicate their chosen material, ideas, and results.

Creative and critical thinking, sustainability, and responsible use of raw materials are the main themes, but in the final project, students have the competency to explore their own ideas and processes.

The study takes into account the seasons, weather and winds, issues and challenges that appear in our daily lives. The changes and developments that take place are reflected in the school's curriculum, so the subjects vary between years. One good example is a workshop on industrial hemp, but not long ago industrial hemp was allowed to be imported and cultivated in Iceland. A valuable resource with a wide range of uses.
