Studying in creative sustainability gives students an advantage to tackle the challenges of the future with innovation and sustainability as a guide. Students get the opportunity, space and recourses to research and cultivate their own creativity, strengths and practical skills. The program is research-oriented and flexible, students actively participate in its formation and are encouraged to take initiative and experiment.

The subjects of the study are constantly changing, they take into account the seasons, weather and winds as well as dealing with current issues. Students are encouraged to develop creative and critical thinking and learn about innovation in handling products. Emphasis is placed on the responsible and careful use of local resources. The local environment in the foreground, but it is explored in a global context.

Sustainability studies

Creative Sustainability aims to support reforms towards sustainability, to promote knowledge and understanding of materials, ecosystems, society and culture in order to understand our own responsibility and how we can take responsibility as individuals and as a society. The goal is to graduate solution-oriented students with a solid knowledge base, courage, strength and courage to try new ways.

LOCAL

Austurland is a treasure trove of rich land, mountains and fjords where wild mushrooms and berries, organically grown vegetables, fish, reindeer and other wild game are among the ingredients.

Students get to know the local raw materials of the region, participate in their procurement and learn diverse methods of handling and using them. Students get to know the entire process of the ingredients they work with, and the emphasis is on working with seasonal ingredients.

By handling different raw materials, students gain valuable insight and gain material knowledge that results in a richer ecosystem awareness. Particular attention is paid to where the raw materials come from, the cycle of raw materials and the ethics of natural resources.

Connection

In the program, students get to know producers and entrepreneurs who work with local ingredients. They learn about production possibilities, different methods and diverse tools and equipment.

Experts from various fields support academic foundations, provide professional insight, increase the diversity of the program and create new connections with parties and institutions. Students work on realistic projects in collaboration with institutions and companies in the region and thus gain an insight into the production process from raw material to product.

Emphasis is placed on responsible innovation that has the interests of society and the ecosystem as a guide.

Students get to know the main methods and techniques in a variety of handicrafts, and a strong emphasis is placed on fostering intangible cultural heritage and the transmission of knowledge between generations.

Students get to know the traditional methods of previous generations, i.a. in the treatment and processing of raw materials, the different effects and storage methods and the utilization possibilities of underutilized raw materials. Students also get to know the creative inventions of the common people of the past who had to survive with what was next to hand.

Students learn to approach cultural heritage with creative and critical thinking as well as approach innovation with the lessons of previous generations in their suitcases.
